NEW UPDATE:

PRE-REGISTER HERE BY 9/3!!

We have just received word from Harvard Dance Center that in-person auditions will now be permitted for Harvard-affiliated students residing on campus! The in-person audition will take place in Harvard Dance Center's Studio 1 (66 Garden St, Cambridge, MA) on Sunday, Sept. 5th at 5-7pm. If you are a Harvard student living on campus and plan on attending the in-person audition, please fill out this registration form no later than Sept. 3rd at 11:59pm (this is a very quick form to fill out but is an important step to help us with planning in accordance with Harvard Dance Center health regulations). Unfortunately, at this time and pursuant to existing Harvard Dance Center COVID policies, an in-person audition cannot be offered to auditioners who are not Harvard affiliates living on campus. For all on campus auditioners, if you prefer, you may submit a video audition in lieu of attending the in-person audition.

In-person auditions will be approximately 1.5-2 hours long in the format of a regular ballet class -- the first portion of the class will be barre and the second half will be center. Dress comfortably and be prepared to move! Pointe shoes are optional. Dancers of all identities and backgrounds are welcome and encouraged to audition!

For non-Harvard affiliates, we will continue with the virtual audition plan that is set out below. Please submit your audition through the Google form link below by September 5th. Please note that we will consider all auditions equally, whether in-person or via video submission; in other words, the mode of your audition will not impact HBC’s evaluation.

Thank you so much for your interest in joining the Harvard Ballet Company! We look forward to returning to campus this fall and are excited to reconnect with our community in-person and to dance and perform alongside one another. And we invite you to join us in that venture! While we had hoped to hold a full in-person audition, the evolving COVID-19 situation has prevented us from doing so at this time. Please note that this may change depending on evolving public health guidelines and Harvard Dance Center's rules governing studio use. In the event that we are able to hold a full in-person audition, we will announce that through our social media platforms (Instagram and Facebook) as well as through our website. In the meantime, we encourage you to submit a video audition by the deadline; if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at harvardballetcompany@gmail.com. We hope you will audition and join our community!

We are excited to announce our Fall 2021 Audition information with detailed instructions that can be found below, along with more information about our company.

OUR company

Harvard Ballet Company is a student-run organization at Harvard College that performs classical ballet, contemporary, and modern dance. Our biannual shows feature choreography by alumnae, company members, professional guest artists, and world-renowned choreographers. HBC also offers weekly ballet classes to all members, which will now be offered virtually; our company classes are usually taught by local professionals as well as our own company members.

OUR PRODUCTION

For HBC’s fall season, we are planning an in-person production before live audiences, all performed in compliance with applicable COVID safety regulations. More information about our fall production will be shared on this website at a later date.

OUR AUDITION

As noted above, Harvard affiliates residing on campus may choose to audition in person on Sept. 5th, 5-7pm at Harvard Dance Center Studio 1. All those who are interested in auditioning with HBC (including Harvard affiliates residing on campus) may audition with us through our virtual audition plan noted below. Please follow our instructions below detailing how to submit your audition to this Google form link by Sunday, September 5, 2021.

IMPORTANT LINKS:

**For the Fall 2021 auditions, we will be using the same audition videos and combinations taught by the amazing Olivia Sison from Fall 2020, so please don’t be confused when the video says auditions for Fall 2020.**

To view Fall 2021 audition class demo, use either:

Submit your audition to us using this Google Form by SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 5: https://forms.gle/h71TdPhCQY4M1h9FA

**All identities and backgrounds are welcome and encouraged to audition! We also welcome those who attend or work at various Boston-area universities and affiliated institutions to audition with us.**

If you run into any technical issues, logistical concerns, or have any questions for us, please email harvardballetcompany@gmail.com, and we'll be happy to help troubleshoot. We are very excited to hear from you and look forward to reviewing your submissions. Thank you for your time and effort!

Instructions:

STEP 1: View

Click to view the demo audition class with the following components:

Audition Class Combinations are taught by our wonderful company member, Olivia Sison!

**We have attached Olivia’s Spotify playlist here! If you experience technical issues accessing or using this audio, feel free to accompany with your own music or without.**

STEP 2: Record

Record yourself doing these combinations

  • Please ALTERNATE right and left between combinations for the barre component

  • Please provide BOTH right and left for the two required center exercises -- adagio and small jumps -- (or more if you want) Please provide BOTH right and left for the pointe (optional) component

  • You may film with your camera in front or from the side (whatever your recording space allows in order to get your entire self in the frame) :)

**We recommend filming the combinations/class in smaller segments. Filming one large video or compiling separate segments into one video may make it difficult to export or share your file. With separate segments (e.g. 1 video per combination), it will hopefully be easier to upload each segment into a single Google Drive folder/Unlisted Youtube/Vimeo playlist [details below] with each video titled,“Tendu 1_Right” or “Ronde de Jambe_Right” for their respective movements and side)**

**Feel free to wear whatever apparel you feel comfortable moving in**

**Additionally, we completely understand that everyone is under different circumstances right now and that not everyone will have space to complete every center combination. This is why we are only fully requiring barre and additionally requiring only one center exercise (so you can choose the one that best fits your space capabilities). We are aware that everyone may have different space restrictions, and we will keep this in mind when reviewing your submissions. If you have any questions or concerns about the space you have to film your audition video, please reach out to us at harvardballetcompany@gmail.com**

STEP 3: Prepare to Share

Title your videos as described under STEP 2 and prepare to share them to either:

  • A Google Drive folder that you can share the link to

       OR

  • An Unlisted Youtube or Vimeo link to share with us

**If either of these two preferred options pose challenges for you, please email us at harvardballetcompany@gmail.com so we can help troubleshoot!**

STEP 4: Optional Supplements

Feel free to submit up to 5 additional materials/multimedia (e.g. dance photos, videos from previous performances, competitions, etc.) that you wish to accompany your audition class components. Feel free to include pieces from non-ballet styles if you wish.

**These may be similarly compiled into a Google Drive folder that can be linked and shared with us (i.e. a “Digital Portfolio”). Supplemental videos may also be added to your Unlisted Youtube/Vimeo playlist from STEP 3 or a separate playlist if you prefer.**

STEP 5: Submit your audition form!

After viewing, recording, and preparing Audition Class Combinations (barre & one center exercise as required and more center exercises and pointe if you desire), and up to 5 additional supplemental materials, submit your information at this Google form link by Sunday, September 5.
